At Scalliwag Toys (in the store, that is, not online–since it would be difficult to do crafts and what-not over the internet, let’s face it), we’ll be celebrating the day along with our colleagues here in Canada and south of the border. Neighbourhood Toy Store Day was the brainchild of the American Specialty Toy Retailing Association (full disclosure: we’re members), and the very first was held last year in 2011. For those of you who missed it, it was quite a party, with activities for the kids and special commemorative reusable bags in a sturdy brown paper (and a box of crayons to decorate them! Those guys at Neighbourhood Toy Stores think of everything).
Neighbourhood Toy Stores Association (we’re members of that one, too–what can I say? We like joining things), has dived into the celebrations again this year, too, so that kids all over North America will once again be able to take part in activities at their local indie retailers no matter where they live.
At Scalliwag Toys, we’ll be doing a special SparkleUp craft (thanks to the insanely generous manufacturer, Orb Factory!) SparkleUps are adorable little sticker-by-number kits that are fun to do and really cute, too.
We’re also taking part in WOWZA Winning Wednesdays, a contest jointly sponsored by Neighbourhood Toy Stores Association and Parents Canada Magazine. They are drawing winners weekly for amazing prizes from manufacturers such as Manhattan Toy, International Playthings, Pathfinders Design, and many more–and the Grand Prize winner will be drawn on 10 November! We’ve already had two lucky customers win a prize in the weekly draws, and there are still weeks to go! You can enter in-store–just ask for a ballot to fill out–and on-line at Parents Canada Magazine.
Feeling forgetful? You can always check our Events page, either here on the blog or on the website (the link is at the bottom of every page there), where you’ll find our What’s Happening at Scalliwag Toys calendar.
Remember, it takes you to start the trend. Shop small. Shop local. And have fun!
